Powering Agricultural Expansion: Hosie Electrical Future-Proofs West Balhalgardy Farm

An Upgrade to Match a Growing Operation

At West Balhalgardy Farm, change is in motion. As part of a larger redevelopment of their seed plant, the team at the Inverurie-based farm needed to relocate and modernise their mains electrical board—while keeping everything else running smoothly.

The project required timing, precision, and experience—with minimal power disruption and consideration for livestock welfare throughout.

“We’re redeveloping our seed plant, and the mains board was housed in a building that was being replaced,” explained Bobby Maitland. “The new board needed to be in place before harvest, and without disrupting the rest of our operation.”

Trusted Partners in a Time-Critical Job

Having worked with Hosie Electrical on many previous jobs, Bobby didn’t hesitate to call on us again.

“We trust their team. They deliver a high-quality service—from the first planning meeting to the final handover.”

The job involved upgrading and relocating the electrical distribution system, all while keeping the farm’s power needs intact and animals safe.

Scope of Work: Practical, Compliant, and Future-Ready

Hosie Electrical’s work included:

  • Full upgrade of the mains electrical board
  • Relocation of distribution equipment to accommodate the new shed structure
  • Ensuring all protective devices met the latest industry standards
  • Planning for future expansion by building in spare capacity

“There were multiple factors in play—logistics, timing, and maintaining continuity across the rest of the site,” said Stephen Booth, Operations Manager at Hosie. “We also consulted with SSEN to ensure future supply handover could be completed seamlessly.”

Project Delivery: Precision on the Clock

Despite the tight timeframe, the project was delivered  slightly ahead of schedule—even with extra work requested along the way.

“The final board looks fantastic,” Bobby said. “And there was minimal impact to our other enterprises, which was key.”

Hosie’s team of Colin Milne and Colin McRobbie (known on-site as “Bill and Ben”) were praised for the quality of their work.

“Their workmanship is unrivalled,” said Bobby. “Stephen managed the planning and logistics brilliantly, and the whole team was great to work with.”

Built for Today, Ready for Tomorrow

The new distribution system now gives the farm:

  • Increased safety compliance
  • Capacity for future expansion
  • Improved integration with on-site solar systems

Though not sustainability-led, the project also included alterations to existing solar infrastructure to improve both safety and energy performance.

“It’s helped future-proof the business,” said Bobby. “We’ve got the space and the systems in place to grow, and we know we’re protected moving forward.”

Farming Local, Partnering Local

West Balhalgardy is a longstanding client of Hosie Electrical, and that ongoing relationship continues to strengthen with every job delivered.

“Absolutely we’d recommend them. They went about everything very professionally—and most importantly, with minimal disruption to our working day.”
