Wired for Community: Hosie Electrical Helps Inverurie Men’s Shed Power Up for Growth

Latest News

A Bigger Space with a Bigger Purpose

Inverurie Men’s Shed has long offered a safe, creative, and sociable space for local men to share skills, build projects, and connect. But with growing membership and a small, outdated workshop, it became clear the group needed more room—and more power.

“Our existing space could only accommodate a few members at a time,” said a Men’s Shed representative. “When the opportunity came to take over a nearby council building, we knew it was time to expand—but the electrics weren’t fit for purpose.”

The building’s storage wing lacked the electrical capacity to support heavy-duty tools and equipment. So, the group designed a full specification for a new workshop layout, complete with compliant 3-phase and single-phase power, lighting, heating, emergency systems, and future-proofed distribution

Choosing a Contractor that Shares Your Values

Two firms were approached for quotes, but we at Hosie Electrical stood out immediately—not just on price or spec, but in approach.

“They were proactive in helping us shape the design solution. Most importantly, they accepted labouring support from Shed Members to keep costs down,” said the project lead. “That meant a lot.”

This wasn’t just a job—it was a collaborative effort. From the first planning meeting to the last cable tie, Hosie worked side-by-side with the group to deliver something that would serve the community for years to come.

The Installation: Efficient, Flexible, Respectful

Hosie’s scope of work included:

  • Complete electrical installation for the new workshop space
  • Full distribution upgrade to latest regulations
  • Installation of LED lighting for energy efficiency
  • Emergency lighting, smoke alarms, and electrical heating
  • Future-proofing capacity for solar and air source heating systems

“The entire team was outstanding,” said the Shed rep. “Stephen Booth guided us from the start and made regular visits to ensure progress. On site, Barrie and Nigel led the team brilliantly and worked hand-in-hand with our volunteers.”

Hosie’s electricians included Barry Gordon, Colin Milne, Gavin Glasspool, Nigel Simpson, Lee Ingles, and Lewis McIver—with Stephen Booth leading project management.

“Every member of the team was flexible, professional, and genuinely respectful of what we were building here.”

Impact: Doubling Capacity, Strengthening Community

While machine installations were still ongoing at the time of writing, the new electrical system has already laid the groundwork for a transformed facility

  • Workshop space more than doubled
  • Modern systems to meet latest standards
  • Members now feel safer, more empowered, and excited for what's to come

“The feedback from our members has been incredibly positive—they can already feel the difference. The electrics are well designed, well delivered, and set us up perfectly for the next phase of development.”

Laying the Foundation for Future Energy Efficiency

While this phase wasn’t sustainability-led, it was strategically built to allow for greener technologies in the future.

“We now have the infrastructure to support solar panels and air source heating when we’re ready. Hosie helped us get future-ready without overspending today.”

A Partnership Rooted in Community Values

For Hosie Electrical, this wasn’t just another job. It was a chance to contribute to a local organisation that matters.

“They went above and beyond—at every stage,” the team shared. “Their pride in supporting local community groups was clear from day one. We’d recommend them in a heartbeat.”
