What is the benefit of Solar PV?

  • Cut electricity costs
  • Installations are currently VAT free
  • Reduces your carbon footprint
  • Saves you money
  • Low maintenance costs

How do solar panels work?

When the sun shines on a solar panel, solar energy is absorbed by individual PV cells in the panel. These cells are made from layers of semi-conducting material, most commonly silicon.

The PV cells produce an electrical charge as they become energised by the sunlight.

This electrical charge creates a direct current (DC) of electricity.

The current passes through an inverter to turn it into alternating current (AC) electricity. This is the kind of current needed for household appliances.

The cells don’t need direct sunlight to work and can even work on cloudy days. However, the stronger the sunshine, the more electricity generated.

How much will it cost?

Installation costs vary dependent on size of system, property size etc. For more information or to arrange a free, no obligation survey please contact the office on 01467 620831 or email admin@hosieelectrical.co.uk.

How long will the installation take?

Installations take between 2 – 5 days depending on size of system, if a battery is being installed etc.

Can I sell excess energy back to my provider?

Yes, once the installation is complete and you have your PV pack sent through which includes your MCS certificate and confirmation from SSE, you can contact your energy provider to agree a tariff for the excess energy that goes back to the grid.

Do I need planning permission?

As long as your building isn’t listed or in a conservation area most installations do not require planning permission in Scotland. If in doubt contact your local planning office.

Do solar panels need to be installed on my roof?

No, if you have ground space, solar panels can be ground mounted.

Are Solar Panels hard to maintain?

Solar PV panels require little maintenance however Hosie Electrical can provide a maintenance to ensure that your system is operating as it should.

We have an issue with nearby birds and worried about nesting

Not a problem, Hosie Electrical can install bird mesh when installing the panels, this will stop any birds getting down the back of the panels and nesting.

Are there any grants available for Solar PV installations?

The Scottish Government has changed their grant scheme. You can now only get funding if you install a heat pump or electric storage heaters along with Solar PV however if you currently have a heat pump you can apply for the Solar PV separately. Only part of the installation is funded and the rest can be provided as an optional loan. For more information please visit https://www.homeenergyscotland.org/home-energy-scotland-grant-loan.
